A fine quality silver punch ladle unusually set with a 22 Carat Gold 1750 Ferdinand VI 1/2 escudo coin and a twisted ballen (whale bone) handle.
Typically unmarked silver but most of the time the bowls were hammered out using a silver crown sized coin, because a silver coin was used hallmarks weren't necesary. Sometimes you can still read the edge lettering of the host coin around the edge of the punch dish.
The scarcity of silver at the beginning of the 18th century resulted in the lovely baleen, ivory and wooden handles.
